What makes a successful WHOA volunteer? Reliability, flexibility, along with a desire to learn and help others. No previous experience with horses or individuals with disabilities are necessary to become a volunteer. WHOA does ask that volunteers be over the age of 14, pass a background check, along with attend Volunteer Training to become acquainted with the program, horses, staff and volunteer positions.
Sidewalkers
Sidewalkers help ensure the safety of the rider. At times, this means providing physical support to the rider. Sidewalkers usually walk or jog along the mounted rider as a safety measure. Sidewalkers enjoy interaction with students and see their progress firsthand!
- Help keep rider on task and focused during lesson
- Assist and reinforce instructions
- Provide physical support to the rider
- Prevent falls
- Help with cues to the horses
Leaders
Leaders prepare the horse for class and lead the animal in the arena. Previous horse experience is necessary. Leaders attend special training to learn about horses, tack, and the facility.
- Lead the horse in class
- Catch, groom and tack horses
- Put horses and tack away
- Possible year-round horse-related needs
